Elementary Math Education

What Is Expected Of Elementary Math Education Today?

Elementary math education is compulsory for children in elementary school, and as they have little or no experience of math until the age of 4 or 5, it is important that the basic ground work is covered well.

Here we'll discuss the basics of elementary math, and look at how successful math teaching is to this age group, with a look at why children fail at math too.

If we think about basic math for elementary school children, we will know that first of all children need to know their numbers. Without this knowledge, they will go no further, but for some children this is a difficult thing. Many children do learn better when shown things, so lots of practice counting out objects will help to reinforce the numbering system. Once this has been established, it's time to work on addition, and again, lots of visual work helps this along. When this has been mastered, subtraction or take away is taught, followed in time by multiplication, and then of course division, or sharing, which many children find very difficult.

With the emphasis on math answers being either right or wrong, it is very easy for young and old to become discouraged it their math work is incorrect. Therefore, it is very important to ensure that all pupils have the right idea with any math questions they are attempting. Unfortunately, this can be very difficult in a class of 20 or more children, and with teachers' expressions and comments, it is extremely easy to undermine a child's fragile confidence. A teacher needs to make sure that the child is not discouraged by a laugh or a frown that they think is aimed at their math work. This makes it even harder for a teacher.

So , what is a teacher to do, when teaching elementary math education?

Fortunately, with the advances in science and computing, the problem is solved to a certain degree. There is so much information on the internet, with math games and puzzles and ideas readily available for an interested teacher. These can make a math class far more interesting to all, and of course there are now various math classes available online for students too. Gone are the days of students being given pages and pages of subtractions to do in as short a time as possible, and thank goodness for that! Practice does make perfect, but the understanding has to be there first. This is the job of the elementary math teacher.

A teacher has to remember that every one learns differently, which means that the same math idea needs to be approached in different ways if at all possible, so that all the class understands the concept. If possible, use visuals to help, for example when dealing with fractions, you might talk about pizzas, and if a pizza is cut into 8 pieces and Johnny eats 4, how much of the pizza is left? Relate to something the children know about, and understanding will quickly follow.

So to summarize, math teachers need to make the topic fun and interesting for all the class. They need to encourage everyone to do their best, and not dwell on mistakes made. Confidence needs to be instilled and the courage to always try and not give up needs to be praised. Math can be a very difficult subject to teach, but it can also be a very rewarding one, with patience and a willingness to help all. And teachers need to remember that the basics are the foundation for all future math problems, so the basics needs to be there as they are the foundation of so much more.
