Continuing Teacher Education

What Is Involved In Continuing Teacher Education?

When an adult decides that they want to teach, they have to take various teacher training courses before becoming qualified to step foot in a classroom on a paid basis. Schools don't allow just anybody into classrooms these days, thank goodness, you have to have the appropriate certification. But sometimes, teachers want to specialize after some time in their current employment, or else they decide to teach a different age group. This leads them to continuing teacher education, which will, once the courses are taken successfully, qualify them for the change of employment.

Now there are hundreds of different courses to choose from, at hundreds of different colleges and universities across the country, with additional classes being offered as distance courses, in other words, online courses. So, the choice has to be made carefully. Make sure that the courses you are considering are accepted by your school district, and if going for a promotion, that they are in fact valid for this. Don't forget to let your school district know that you are taking these courses, and remember to hand in your transcripts in a timely manner. And it is a good idea to let your principal know that you are continuing your education too. It is good to share the information you learn with your fellow teachers, if it is of interest to them.

With the advances of internet has come the development of many online courses, which may be of interest for teachers. In fact there are many online university and colleges around today. These enable you to work when it is convenient for you, rather than fixed days and times of the week, at some location you have to spend time travelling to and from. So online education, with its flexibility, can save you both time and money, and with the price of gas these days, this can be significant. In fact you could use the time you would spend travelling to and from school to complete another course!

A disadvantage on online courses is the lack of personal interaction with others on the course. The online component will probably have forums that you need to visit online, and where you are expected to post your own questions, while commenting on the answers of others.

This works very well, and I think that for continuing education this is fine, but I would not recommend this for all types of courses, as I feel that a college and university education is also an education in life and finding your own way in life without the support of relatives or parents. I think that it is a very valuable experience to go away to college or university, as it is a more full education. However, that is my opinion, and not really on topic for what we are discussing here.

Continuing teacher education is a must for our schools, for if the teachers are not educated in the latest areas, how can they possibly give a quality education to the children in their class? Our children deserve the best education we can possibly give them, and this can only come from quality teachers, teachers up to date with everything that is happening in our world today.
